“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.”
– Howard Thurman –
This is easily one of my favorite quotes of all time, hands down. It causes you to stir yourself up and really think about your core values. On our quest for success, we spend so much time showing others that we can do what they want that we forsake what we desire, and often times, what we are called to do.
Howard Thurman could not be more right when he says, “what the world needs is people who are alive.” Think about why there is so much unhappiness and depression in the world right now, a lot of it is due to people living lives that lack purpose and fulfillment.
They are chasing after things that everyone deems as valuable, alas these things do not leave them satisfied at the end of the day but craving more to try to fill the void in their heart. People try to achieve happiness by creating these overbooked lives that inevitably burn them out.
King Solomon, one of the wisest and most productive men to ever lived even struggled with this issue. He had all the wealth and wisdom in the world, but how he was using it left him craving something more.
“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”
– Ecclesiastes 2:11 –
We are meant to yearn and search for something more but it is supposed to be accompanied by a feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment when you lay your head down on your pillow at night.
Here are 3 tips for discovering what makes you come alive:
1. Ask yourself, “What would you do for free?
If money was not a limiting factor in your life, what would you want to spend all your time doing? What would make you look forward to jumping out of bed in the morning excited to start the day?
Those passions were placed in you because you have the capability to do something amazing through them. Don’t forsake your dreams.
2. Play to your personal strengths
No one can do what you do like you do.
Read that again. One more time.
This goes hand-in-hand with your passions. If you can do something better than anyone else that is a gift worth investing into.
Spend time with your gift, exercise it, put in the time to learn more about it and master it.
3. Find a mentor
Sometimes we need an outside perspective from experienced people to help us discover our gifts and talents.
Find and develop a relationship with someone who has walked a similar path to both success and failure. It is there you will find true wisdom on what you can do, and not do, to cultivate your calling.
Mentors can come in different types:
- Direct Mentors – These are the people that are easily accessible for you to seek guidance. This can be a boss, colleague, friend, parent or pastor, who cares about you enough to help you find your way.
- Indirect Mentors – These are the people you look up to, who have a wealth of inner wisdom. They may be authors, celebrities, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, you name it. You may never have direct contact with these individuals but they can still feed into you through their books, blogs, videos, etc.
It is important to find mentors that will feed and challenge you with the right wisdom that will help you grow. Start looking for them today!
So, what is it that makes your spirit leap and come alive? The first step to living a fulfilled life is breaking out of your normal daily routine.
If you want your life to be different start by changing something today. Don’t try to make drastic changes all at once, because it will only leave you defeated and discouraged which is worse than where you left off.
Start making small changes in your life today that will allow you to pursue the things you love. Make it your goal to live life with purpose.
